Diabetes and Your Pet

Diabetes Diagnosis and Treatment From Our Katy Veterinarian

At Katy Area Veterinary Medical Group, our Katy veterinarian specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of any number of diseases and medical conditions. Unfortunately, one of the more common diseases we see in pets these days is diabetes, which occurs when your pet's blood has high concentrations of glucose and the pancreas isn't able to produce enough insulin to keep these levels balanced.

Common Signs of Diabetes in Pets

Diabetes can occur in pets at all stages of life, though it is more common in adult and senior pets. All pet owners have a responsibility to be on the lookout for some of the more common signs and symptoms of diabetes. One of the most frequently reported symptoms of diabetes in both cats and dogs is excessive thirst. If your pet suddenly can't seem to get enough water, this is something that should be brought to our veterinarian's attention right away. This is especially true if excessive thirst is combined with unexplained weight loss and/or lethargy, as these are a couple of the other most common signs.

Diagnosing and Treating Diabetes in Pets

Generally, we can confidently diagnose diabetes in a pet through a combination of physical examination and diagnostic blood work. Specifically, we can check your pet's blood for elevated levels of glucose. The good news is that if your pet is diagnosed with diabetes, there are treatment options available. Depending on the severity, some cases of diabetes can be controlled with changes in diet alone. In other cases, you may need to begin giving your pet daily insulin doses at home to manage blood glucose levels.
